Tommy Fleetwood WITB (25th May, 2025) - What's In The Bag? The Charles Schwab Challenge @ Colonial Country Club
Fleetwood needs control and launch, and this Qi35 gives him both. He’s not the fastest off the tee, but the Ventus Red keeps things piercing and centered when he’s swinging full tilt
TOMMY FLEETWOOD: A SEASON OF ALMOSTS, BEARDS AND BANGERS
Tommy Fleetwood’s 2025 season has been the golf equivalent of ordering a steak and getting a very good veggie burger—satisfying, surprising, but still not quite the main event. And that main event? A win. A big, juicy, PGA Tour win. But Tommy’s not here to cry over missed cuts or backdoor top-10s. He's here to vibe, to stripe long irons, and to look like the guy your girlfriend says not to worry about.
Let’s talk numbers: Fleetwood started the year with a T3 at the Sony Open, followed it up with a classic “Fleetwood Finish™” (T8) at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, and turned in a heartbreak special at the Arnold Palmer Invitational where he finished second to a red-hot Scottie Scheffler—again. By March, he was becoming golf’s most consistent bridesmaid, looking sharp in Nike scripting while his name kept popping up just under the winner’s.
Then came Augusta. Masters week. You know, the one where Fleetwood plays like he owns 13 clubs and a curse. After sitting T2 going into Saturday, he posted a final-round 76 that had all the grace of a Tesco trolley crash. But you know what? He still smiled through it, because Tommy isn’t just a player—he’s a vibe. He’s golf’s golden retriever in a sea of tortured house cats.
Most recently, at the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, he was in the mix until a Sunday shank on 15 led to a triple bogey and a slow, spiraling fade to T19. But even when the putts don't drop and his driver is more spray-and-pray than sniper rifle, Tommy keeps clawing.
He’s top 15 in strokes gained: approach and still one of the best fairway wood players on the planet. In a world of bomb-and-gouge, Fleetwood is the jazz guitarist in a death metal band. And he’s playing loud.
STILL SEARCHING FOR THAT ELUSIVE PGA TOUR WIN
Let’s be honest—Fleetwood’s career on American soil is beginning to feel like a Netflix docuseries. “Episode 6: So Close, Yet So British.” Since 2017, he’s racked up more top-fives than most players have wins, but somehow that PGA Tour victory still remains as elusive as your mate paying you back on Revolut.
This isn’t just a story of near-misses—it’s a tragicomedy. The 2018 U.S. Open? Runner-up. The 2020 Honda Classic? Runner-up. The 2023 RBC Canadian Open? Lost in a playoff after missing a 3-footer that had less break than a prison sentence.
And every time he gets close, we get the same post-round interview: the humble shrug, the boyish smile, the “I’m playing great, it’s just not dropping.” Tommy, mate—we love the positivity, but at some point, golf karma owes you a W.
He’s basically the Leonardo DiCaprio of golf: elite talent, loads of nominations, no trophy (on U.S. soil). But while Leo eventually got his Oscar by wrestling a bear, Fleetwood might need to wrestle Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm, and his own short game demons to get that elusive W.
But when that win comes? The golf internet will combust. And we’ll all be there, pint in hand, crying, tweeting, and updating our “Tommy Time” memes for the moment he finally breaks through.
WHAT’S IN TOMMY’S BAG? FLEETWOOD’S 2025 EQUIPMENT SETUP
Tommy Fleetwood doesn’t just look cool—his gear setup is absolute filth in the best way. It’s the kind of bag that screams “precision assassin” but with a bit of flair. Here’s a breakdown of what he’s gaming this season:
Driver: TaylorMade Qi35 10.5°, Fujikura Ventus Red 6X Velocore+ shaft
Fleetwood needs control and launch, and this setup gives him both. He’s not the fastest off the tee, but the Ventus Red keeps things piercing and centered when he’s swinging full tilt.
Mini Driver: TaylorMade BRNR Mini Driver 13.5°, Fujikura Ventus Red 6X Velocore+ shaft
An elite move. The mini driver is his Swiss Army knife off the tee—perfect for links-style control or those tight PGA setups. Plus, it looks cool as hell.
5 Wood: TaylorMade Qi35 Fairway 18°, Mitsubishi Kuro Kage 80 XTS X shaft
This club gets more airtime than his driver. High launch, soft landing—Fleetwood hits it like your favorite iron, but 240 yards.
9 Wood: TaylorMade Qi10 24°, Mitsubishi Kuro Kage 80TX shaft
Fleetwood isn’t afraid to go high-lofted and technical. The 9-wood gives him consistency and playability from just about anywhere.
Irons: TaylorMade P770 (3), P7TW (4-PW), True Temper Project X 6.5 shafts
The P770 gives him a touch of help in the long iron, but the rest is pure artistry. The P7TWs are musclebacks built for purists—his ball flight is lower than your self-esteem after watching him hit a stinger.
Wedges: TaylorMade Hi-Toe 4 Wedge (52), Titleist Vokey SM10 56° (12D), Titleist Vokey Design Wedgeworks (60°), True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400 shafts
Tommy mixes manufacturers for his short game, proving he’s not bound by branding—only by feel and performance. His wedge game is silky, especially with the 60° for saucy flop shots.
Putter: TaylorMade Spider Tour X, SuperStroke Mid Slim 2.0
The big mallet helps his sometimes shaky putting stroke stay on line. It’s a club that’s been in and out of the bag more times than a love interest in a Netflix drama.
Ball: TaylorMade TP5x Pix #19
Slick visuals and ultra-low spin on full shots. Fleetwood likes that high launch and soft land combo, and the Pix design helps with alignment.
Grip: Iomic, Golf Pride Tour Velvet cord
His grips mix feel and traction—ideal for the bearded bomber from Southport.
2025 CHARLES SCHWAB CHALLENGE PREVIEW: TOMMY TIME?
Ah, Colonial. Home of Hogan’s Alley, narrow fairways, bentgrass greens, and more doglegs than Crufts. This week’s Charles Schwab Challenge could be the one where Tommy finally throws that monkey off his back—and we mean it literally. That thing’s been hanging on since 2017.
Fleetwood’s game fits Colonial like a glove: he shapes it both ways, thrives on shotmaking, and ranks top 10 on Tour in proximity from 150–175 yards—an essential stat for this classic layout. His fairway wood game alone should get him into position to attack the par 4s.
Plus, the pressure is slightly off this week. It’s not a major, it’s not a signature event, and there’s just enough elite talent in the field to hide in the weeds… until Saturday.
Fleetwood’s strategy will revolve around that 9-wood and Mini Driver combo. Expect a lot of fairways, a lot of 8-irons, and a lot of beard sweat in the Texas heat.
His putting—often the only thing holding him back—has shown real progress over the last few weeks. If the Spider Tour X keeps humming, he could easily go 65-66 over the weekend and stroll into Sunday tied for the lead.
If he does win? It’ll be glorious. Twitter will collapse under the weight of Fleetwood gifs. Sky Sports will run a 6-hour special titled “Tommy’s Time.” And the man himself will probably downplay it with a big smile, say “cheers,” and go hit balls for two hours like a psycho.
This week? This could be it. Don’t blink.
