Who is Rickie Fowler?

Rickie Fowler is golf’s eternal underdog, or at least that's how he has often been painted in the media. Not the big-hitting, swaggering type like Tiger Woods or Bryson DeChambeau, but rather the guy with the kaleidoscope personality who looks like he could drop a few rounds of 18 and then hit the nightlife in a matching orange outfit. Seriously, does anyone look better in bright orange than Rickie? Just saying.

Born on December 13, 1988, in Murrieta, California, Fowler has been defying the odds in more ways than one. First, let’s talk about the fashion. Orange has been his trademark, whether he’s at a PGA event or grabbing lunch at the local Whole Foods. It’s as if his wardrobe and golf game were both designed to catch the eye—and, in fairness, they both do.

He turned pro in 2009 after a stellar amateur career, making waves by finishing 5th at the 2008 U.S. Open as an amateur. Fowler’s biggest claim to fame in the early days? His ability to make the golf world sit up and take notice despite not being one of the long-hitters. But his shot-making ability and unique putting stroke kept him competitive, and his fearless attitude quickly gained him a legion of fans, especially among those who loved the idea of having a “fun” golfer on tour.

Now, fast-forward to the 2025 Charles Schwab Challenge. Rickie Fowler has evolved from the poster child of “just wait for him to win a major” to a seasoned pro with a résumé that includes a win at the 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open and multiple top-10 finishes in major tournaments. But, perhaps more importantly, he’s found a level of consistency that had previously been missing from his career. He’s more than just a longshot now; he’s someone who could contend at any given time, and his game is built to last.

Previous Performances at the Charles Schwab Challenge

Fowler has had a somewhat mixed history at the Charles Schwab Challenge. His best finish came in 2016, where he finished 2nd behind Jordan Spieth. A tie for 15th in 2019 also proved that Fowler could compete on this challenging Colonial Country Club layout. The course demands a precise game, with tree-lined fairways, small greens, and a set of tricky wind conditions, which have traditionally required accuracy over power.

In the 2024 season, Fowler’s form was solid but unspectacular at Colonial, finishing 16th overall. He’s shown that he’s capable of navigating the tricky greens and tight fairways at Colonial but has often struggled with putting when conditions are firm. However, with a more refined approach to his equipment setup and overall game in 2025, Fowler will be looking to improve on that performance, possibly even breaking through to claim his first major since 2019.

Rickie Fowler’s 2025 Equipment Setup: WITB Breakdown

Fowler’s equipment choices have long been scrutinized by fans and critics alike, and the 2025 season is no different. Let’s dive into the gear that he’ll be using to take on the Colonial challenge at the 2025 Charles Schwab Challenge.

Driver: Cobra DS Adapt 10°, Mitsubishi Diamana WB 63TX shaft

Fowler's Cobra DS Adapt driver has been one of the key changes to his setup for 2025. Compared to the 2024 season, where he used a Cobra King RADSPEED, the DS Adapt driver features a more adjustable weighting system. This allows Fowler to fine-tune his launch and spin characteristics based on the conditions at Colonial. The Mitsubishi Diamana WB 63TX shaft offers both stability and control, critical for the accuracy he needs off the tee at a course like Colonial.

Mini Driver: TaylorMade BRNR Mini Driver Copper 13.5°, Mitsubishi Diamana WB 73TX shaft

The mini driver is becoming a fan favorite, and Fowler's choice of the TaylorMade BRNR Mini Driver Copper in a 13.5° loft is designed for optimal control and distance off the tee, especially on the narrower fairways at Colonial. The slightly lower loft provides a bit of extra rollout, while the Mitsubishi Diamana WB 73TX shaft helps keep the ball flight penetrating and accurate.

5 Wood: Cobra LTDx LS Prototype 17.5°, Lin-Q M40X White 8F5 shaft

Moving to his fairway wood, Fowler has switched to the Cobra LTDx LS Prototype 5 wood for 2025, which offers a blend of distance and control, perfect for shots that require a little extra finesse—like when playing into Colonial’s smaller greens. The Lin-Q M40X White 8F5 shaft provides the necessary stability for consistent strikes, especially when trying to shape the ball around the doglegs.

Irons: Cobra King Tour (4-PW), KBS Tour C-Taper 125 S+ shafts

Fowler’s irons are the backbone of his game, and for 2025, he’s gone with the Cobra King Tour irons, a slight departure from his 2024 setup, where he used the King Forged TEC. The King Tour irons are designed for precision, offering an excellent blend of forgiveness and control. The KBS Tour C-Taper 125 S+ shafts give him a slightly stiffer flex, which helps with control during his iron shots, especially when facing tough greens like those at Colonial.

Wedges: Cobra Snakebite 54° (@52°), 56° (@54°), Cleveland RTZ Tour Rack 60° (LOW6), True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400 shafts

Wedges are key for Fowler’s short game, and in 2025, he’s gone with the Cobra Snakebite wedges, which are known for their aggressive grooves and spin performance. The Cleveland RTZ Tour Rack 60° wedge rounds out his setup for high-lofted, delicate shots around the greens. The True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400 shafts ensure that each wedge is responsive and allows for precise distance control.

Putter: L.A.B. Golf DF3

Rickie Fowler’s putting has been one of the more inconsistent parts of his game over the years. For 2025, he has opted for the L.A.B. Golf DF3 putter, which features an innovative design aimed at increasing stability and improving stroke consistency. The putter’s balanced weight and unique construction make it a perfect fit for Colonial’s tricky greens, which can challenge even the best putters.

Ball: TaylorMade TP5

Fowler is sticking with the TaylorMade TP5 ball for 2025. Known for its speed and spin control, the TP5 ball suits Fowler’s game, especially for his iron play and wedge shots. The ball helps him achieve both control and distance, making it ideal for the demanding conditions at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Grips: Golf Pride Tour Velvet

Rickie’s grip of choice for 2025 is the Golf Pride Tour Velvet, which offers a soft feel and great control—perfect for a course like Colonial, where feel around the greens is paramount.

Rickie Fowler’s Life and Career

Rickie Fowler’s career has been anything but dull. From his first PGA Tour win at the 2012 Wells Fargo Championship to his struggles and resurgence, Fowler’s journey has been marked by both highs and lows. But one thing has always remained constant: his infectious personality and his approachability with fans.

Fowler has competed in 13 major championships, with his best finish being a tie for 2nd at the 2014 U.S. Open. His performances at the Masters have been commendable, but he has yet to secure a Green Jacket. Still, his ties to Augusta go beyond just playing the tournament. Fowler is a fan favorite at the Masters, thanks in part to his style, his character, and his ability to connect with fans in a way that’s rare for players at the top of the game.

Throughout his career, Fowler has often been viewed as a player on the verge of greatness—someone who might not hit the same heights as Tiger or Phil, but who had all the tools to make a massive impact. His playful attitude, combined with his consistent results, has made him a crowd favorite, even if the major wins haven’t piled up as quickly as some might have expected.

Now, at the 2025 Charles Schwab Challenge, Fowler’s comeback story is poised to take another step forward. Armed with a new set of clubs, a refined game, and a healthy dose of optimism, the 2025 season could be the one where Fowler adds another chapter to his storied career.
